Haven't been able to find a park closer to me that even compares to Smith. With all the outdoor equipment and the indoor playspaces for kids under 5, you could easily spend the entire day there. Some of the equipment is so innovative, I felt like I needed instructions on how to use it, but leave it to kids--they always figure it out! Our 2 1/2 year old had a blast and was able to use nearly all the equipment. We especially love the disc swings, the giant spider-web, the merry-go-round and the big wooden slide. The fact that the park is FREE, and that there are well-enforced policies on the age of kids that can be in the park, as well as the mandatory presence and attentiveness of their accompanying adults (no cell-phone use inside the park!) makes the experience that much more enjoyable. Bring a lunch and have a blast--and don't forget to take your trash away with you!

As a young child, my mother took me and cousins to Smith Playground at least twice a summer. We travelled by public transportation, seemingly forever, from south Philadelphia, armed with a picnic lunch to be enjoyed later under the huge trees; or on one of the porches.
It was a magical place, with an indoor playroom equipped with "giant" blocks and other playthings. She always stressed that the Smith family had donated the grounds and the buildings; but I wish I knew more about the history.
When I saw the picture of the wooden indoor slide, my heart leapt with joy. It's just as I remembered, if somewhat enlarged by a child's memory. :)
Mother always found out about, and took us to everything within her means, and on week-ends Daddy would take us places as well: Fairmount and Pennypack Parks, the Art Museum, the Franklin Institute, trips down the Delaware River on the Wilson Line, to Riverview Beach Park, Willow Grove Park and more; but The Smith Playground was always a favorite, seventy-some years ago. :) Marie Magill

Smith Playground is a must visit for any Philadelphian, or visitor to Philly with kids. Besides the giant slide house, there is an indoor playhouse (for babies - age 3/4). They are in the process of completing a brand new toddler lot, which will make it really fantastic for the little ones.
